Arrival in Nongkhai. Transfer on own to the Friendship Bridge.
Meet upon arrival and transfer to the hotel. Rest of the day free at leisure.

Day 4: Vientiane - Vang Vieng
Pickup at the hotel at 0830 and drive to Vang Vieng. Drop off at your hotel.

Free day.
You can relax at the terrace of Thavornsouk and enjoy the scenery along the Nam Song River, undertake an excursion to one of the many caves around Vang Vieng or paddle down the river by kayak.

Day 6: Vang Vieng - Luang Prabang
Meet our representative in the morning and transfer to the busstation. He will buy your busticket and say goodbye to you. By public bus to Luang Prabang. Upon arrival in Luang Prabang transfer on own to your hotel.

Day 7: Luang Prabang
Free day to explore Luang Prabang on own.
The town Luang Prabang is an outstanding example of the fusion of traditional architecture and Lao urban structures with those built by the French colonial authorities in the 19th and 20th centuries. The town has been declared a World Heritage by UNESCO in 1995.

Day 9: Luang Prabang - Phonsavan
Drive from Luang Prabang to Phonsavan on the Plain of Jars by public bus. Prepare yourself for a very long day of travelling. Our guide will transfer you to the busstation and will accompany you during your trip to the border the coming days. The public bus to Phonsavan departs at 0830. There are no reserved seats in this non-airconditioned bus.
The bus will stop several times, amongst others at a basic lunch restaurant. We advise you to take some bread and fruit along with you.
Late afternoon arrival in Phonsavan.Transfer to the hotel on own.

Day 10: Phonsavan
Today you will visit the mysterious Plain of Jars. Visit site 2 and 3. At several places around the town of Phonsavan enormous jars are scattered. There is still no explanation as to how the clay jars found their way onto the plain, nor what purpose they served. More likely, the jars are enormous funerary urns carved by a vanished Bronze Age people.
Many jars have been destroyed or damaged during the Vietnam War, when American planes bombed positions of the communist Pathet Lao. You will visit today some of the most interesting sites.In the afternoon visit a Hmong village.
Late afternoon return to your hotel.

Day 11: Phonsavan - Sam Neua
Drive from Phonsavan to Sam Neua by public bus. Prepare yourself for a very long day of travelling. Transfer to the busstation. The public bus to Phonsavan departs at 0800. There are no reserved seats in this non-airconditioned bus.
The bus will stop several times, amongst others at a basic lunch restaurant. We advise you to take some bread and fruit along with you. You will pass through Muang Kham, the capital of Xieng Khouang Province, located in a fertile valley.
Late in the afternoon you'll arrive in Samneua. Walk to the guesthouse.

Day 12: Sam Neua - Mai Chau
Drive to Viengxai. Departure at 0700. You will arrive in Viengxai and visit the cave of Kaysone Phomvihane, one of the Pathet Lao leaders who later became the first prime minister of Lao PDR. During the war the Pathet Lao leaders had their headquarters in these caves.
Continue to the border at Na Meo. Arrive at the border not later than noon. At this off the beaten track bordercrossing there is no visa upon arrival service so you need to have a valid visa for Vietnam.
Your Vietnamese guide and driver will wait for you. Your transportation will be a Russian jeep. You have entered Vietnam in Thanh Hoa province, one of the least visited and unexplored provinces in the country. Along the way we will stop at several Muong villages.
Picnic lunch along the way. We'll drive along the Ma river to Pu Luong Nature Reserve. The Pu Luong limestone landscape is an area of outstanding beauty, cultural interest and high biodiversity stretching from Mai Chau to Cuc Phuong National Park.

Day 13: Mai Chau
Today you will have a whole day to explore the beautiful valley of Mai Chau with its verdant rice fields and White Thai villages. Accompanied by your guide you will set out on an easy walk and visit several of the villages with the typical traditional stilt houses.

Day 14: Mai Chau - Tuan Giao
Today will be a long day driving to Tuan Giao. Our first destination today will be Son La. This sleepy town has few points of interest except for an old French colonial prison. We will continue our journey through spectacular landscape. We will pass many minority villages of Hmong, Muong, White and Black Thai. Drive to Thuan Chau before starting the ascent of the "Phan Din" pass. We will spend the night in the small town Tuan Giao.

Day 15: Tuan Giao - Muong Lay - Tam Duong
After breakfast continue to Tam Duong. Another day of spectacular scenery and minority villages. of Flower Hmong, Red Zao, amongst others. We pass Lai Chau where we have lunch. Afterwards we continue to Tam Duong.

Day 16: Tam Duong - Sapa
Continue to Sapa where you will arrive before 1 AM.

Day 18: Sapa - Lao Cai - Hanoi

Transfer to Lao Cai for the overnight train back to Hanoi.
You will sleep in shared airconditioned compartments with four soft sleeping berths. Drinks are being sold on this train but we advise you to buy some bread and fruit in advance for this trainride.

Day 19: Hanoi
Arrival in Hanoi. You will be met by our drive who will transfer you to the hotel. The rest of the day is free at leisure to explore Hanoi on own.

Day 21: Hanoi - Halong Bay
Our driver will meet you at 0745 and transfer you to our office. At 0815 your group will depart for the join-in trip to Halong Bay. The drive will take approximately 3 hours. Ha Long Bay, in the Gulf of Tonkin, includes some 1,600 islands and islets, forming a spectacular seascape of limestone pillars. In 1994 Ha Long Bay was declared a UNESCO World Heritage. After arrival you will board your vessel for your two day boat trip through Halong Bay. A seafood lunch will be served on board. This afternoon you will visit the Hang Sung Sot cave (aka as 'Surprising Cave'). We moor at Ti Top Beach for a swim.

Day 22: Halong Bay - Hanoi
You will have breakfast on board enjoying the view of Halong Bay. We continue our cruise to Halong Bay. At noon you will disembark. Lunch will be at Ha Long restaurant before the return to Hanoi where you will arrive at 1630.

Day 23: Hanoi
