This off - the - beaten - track tour on the very scenic and remote Nam Lik includes a boat trip on the Nam Ngum Lake, Laos' biggest water reservoir still little explored by tourists.

Day 1:
Starting from Vientiane, the kayaking trip begins in the town of Hin Heup, where Route 13 crosses the Nam Lik.
Two experienced river guides take the kayakers through the first fun rapids (grade 1 - 2; suitable for beginners). The afternoon is spent in calmer waters, where the local fishermen are at work. A break on the river is ideal for swimming and cliff jumping into cool and deep waters.
From the village of Ban That, a pick - up takes the group down the remainder of a guesthouse by the Nam Ngum dam.

Day 2:
The day is spent exploring the Nam Ngum Lake with its dozens of tropical islands. Stops on the islands give enough time to relax and swim in the fresh waters of this reservoir.
Lunch at a floating restaurant features freshly caught fish and local vegetables besides good views onto the lake. Return from Thalat to Vientiane or Vang Vieng by mid afternoon.
