Detail Itinerary
Day 1: Hanoi - Hang Kia. ~200
km
Ride to the direction of the West. We pass
through Hoa Binh town, then along the Laotian
border on our left and Da (Black) river on our
right. We leave the river in the mountainous
cirque of Mai Chau to go up until the plateau of
Mai Chau.
Multiple horizons in range of green and grey.
Before the plateau, we turn right toward the
border until the H'mong village of Hang Kia,
which accommodates us for the night.
Day 2: Hang Kia - Thung Mai - Thung Man. ~15
km
We ride for the first kilometres. Then we park
them and climb up the hill which leads to the
legendary village of Thung Mai, significant
village in H'mong legend because of the annual
gatherings which are held around its small round
lake, full only once a year, after the rainy
season.
Lunch at the village - walk in the surroundings.
Then come back to pick up the motorbikes and
continue to the last village accessible by the
road, the H'mong village of Thung Man. Night
with our friends.
Day 3: Thung Man - Mai Chau. ~60 km
Before Mai Chau, we will stop and walk between
lake and waterfall.
The valley of Mai Chau lies between two rivers:
the Da River and the Ma River, which make it
very fertile and rich in varied landscapes,
medium mountains, forest, lake, rivers, and
infinitude of small footpaths, which offer many
possibilities of trek. In the valley of Mai Chau
and its buttresses are Muong, White Thai, H'mong
(in the height), and the Dao who we meet at the
markets or in their villages during trekking,
boating or while driving.
Day 4: Mai Chau - Song Thao. ~180 km
Beautiful landscape. Valley of wax-tree, native
land of lacquer makers in Vietnam.
Song Thao is a very small village lost in the
hills on west bank of Black river. The
particular thing is that this is the place where
we grow lacquer trees to collect the precious
substance called lacquer.
We are welcome in the house of our friends. You
meet Kinh (ethnic Vietnamese). We propose to
stay in the house of the two "uncles", direct
descendant of the ancestor who discovered the
property of this tree and the way to use it,
about four hundreds years ago (quite recently
compared to China who knew about lacquer few
thousands years ago).
Day 5: Song Thao - Vu Linh. ~150 km
Ride from Song Thao to Vu Linh, we will ride
through limestone and palm trees, on asphalted
road and dirt roads, then reach Thac Ba lake
where a boat will be waiting for us. Then we
will cruise on the lake from west to east, until
the Dao village of Vu Linh. The welcome is
exceptional.
Day 6: Vu Linh - Ha Noi. ~180 km
Ride back to Hanoi in 7 hours via Son Tay to
avoid the heavy traffic on the main road. Arrive
in Hanoi around 5 pm.
